About us

Destellos de Luz A. B. P.

Association for the support of the blind and visually impaired.

MISION

We are a Private Charity Association that provides comprehensive medical care to low-income individuals with visual impairments, with the goal of preventing blindness. We also support blind individuals through educational programs that foster their growth and development.

At Destellos de Luz we firmly believe that every human being—regardless of age or economic resources—deserves access to the best specialists and the most advanced ophthalmological care, all within top-quality facilities.

Group photograph of women at the Destellos de Luz event, taken in a space with colonial architecture, including columns and wooden beamed ceilings. Participants wear elegant clothing in shades of white, beige, and some vibrant colors, suggesting a special occasion. Some women sit in the front row while others stand behind, creating a composition typical of a commemorative photo. The image has the quality and style characteristic of a photograph from the 1980s or 1990s.

Background

From 1976 to 1997, a group of women led by Mrs. Emely Canavati de Assad joined efforts as a Volunteer Ladies’ Committee to support the blind members of the association “Invidentes Unidos de Monterrey.” They provided assistance through general surgeries, eyeglasses, food supplies, employment opportunities, administrative expenses, and the remodeling of facilities, among other activities.

As the need for vision surgeries continued to grow, the Committee saw the urgency of creating an association where any low-income blind or visually impaired person could find support. This dream became a reality in October 1997 with the founding of Destellos de Luz.

Our Reality

The ability to see the light, watch a family play, appreciate a smile, or simply read a book seems natural to most of us. However, thousands of children are born blind or with visual impairments, and even more people of all ages lose their sight due to illness, accidents, or aging.

According to INEGI (Population and Housing Census 2020), Mexico had 126,014,024 inhabitants in 2020, of which 6,179,890 had disabilities, and 4,956,420 of these were related to vision.
